- 4 cups flour
- 3 eggs
- 1 lb. dates, chopped
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup lard/shortening
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts (optional)
(1) For the filling: Boil dates, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1/2 cup water. Cool and add nuts, if desired.
(2) Mix remaining ingredients and roll out dough into 2 large rectangles. Spread filling on top, then roll dough into logs.
(3) Chill overnight.
(4) Slice and bake at 350 F for 10-15 minutes.
